Should I buy a steel-shank or carbide-shank boring bar?

Steel-shank bars are fine up to 4ร— length-to-diameter ratio (L/D). Beyond 4ร— L/D, carbide-shank bars are 3ร— stiffer and reduce chatter dramatically. Carbide bars cost 2-3ร— more but are essential for deep bores where a steel bar will chatter and leave a chewed-up surface.

What is the minimum bore size for a boring bar?

Minimum bore = nominal bar diameter + 1-2 mm clearance. A 10 mm boring bar can reach into a ~12 mm minimum bore (the tip geometry lets the insert project past the bar body). For tiny bores (<6 mm), you need a micro-boring bar with a very small insert like CCGT030102 or proprietary round-insert designs.

Why does my boring bar chatter?

Top three causes in order: (1) L/D ratio too high for a steel-shank bar โ€” swap to carbide. (2) Insert nose radius too large for the bore diameter. (3) Machine clamping not rigid โ€” insufficient clamping length in the tool post (need 4ร— bar diameter clamped).

Can I use the same insert in a boring bar and an external turning holder?

Usually yes if the ISO code matches. A CCMT060204 insert mounts in either an SCLCR external holder or an SCLCR boring bar at the correct size. Chipbreaker choice changes though โ€” boring wants a lighter chipbreaker (e.g. -SM) because chip evacuation is harder internally.
