Frequently asked questions

When should I use HSS drill bits vs solid carbide drill bits?

HSS wins on cost-per-hole for mild steel and aluminium at low-to-medium volume. Solid carbide wins for stainless steel, hardened materials, and high-volume CNC production where hole quality and speed matter. For a 6 mm hole in mild steel at 200 holes/day, HSS is cheaper; same hole in stainless at 400/day, carbide pays back.

What is the difference between M2, M35, and M42 HSS?

M2 is standard HSS for mild steel, aluminium, plastics. M35 has 5% cobalt โ€” for stainless, cast iron, harder alloys. M42 has 8% cobalt โ€” for Inconel, titanium, and HRC 40+ materials. Cost scales roughly 1ร— / 3ร— / 5ร— for M2 / M35 / M42.

What is a TiN-coated drill bit?

TiN (titanium nitride) is a gold-coloured coating that reduces friction at the cutting edge. Increases drill life by 30-100% over uncoated HSS for most materials. Small price premium, usually worth it.

Do you stock drill sets or individual sizes?

Both. Popular sizes (2-13 mm jobber, 3-10 mm stub) are available as sets; specific sizes available individually. Morse taper shank drills (3-50 mm) are available individually by size.

What feed and speed should I use for drilling?

Depends on drill material and workpiece. For a 6 mm M2 drill in mild steel: 800-1200 rpm, 0.10-0.20 mm/rev feed. For the same drill in stainless: 300-500 rpm, 0.05-0.12 mm/rev. Carbide drills run 3-5ร— faster. Message us on WhatsApp with your specific setup for a starting recommendation.
