How do I pick the right ER collet size for my tool?
Each ER collet is rated for a 1 mm sub-range. A 10 mm ER-20 collet clamps shanks from 9 to 10 mm. Use the collet matching your tool shank exactly — do not try to clamp a 10 mm shank in an 11 mm collet.
What is the difference between ER-16, ER-20, ER-25, ER-32, and ER-40?
The numbers are nominal outer diameters of the collet series. Larger numbers clamp larger tool shanks. ER-16 clamps 1-10 mm. ER-20 clamps 1-13 mm. ER-25 clamps 1-16 mm. ER-32 clamps 3-20 mm. ER-40 clamps 3-26 mm. Larger series = larger machine capacity but heavier, higher inertia.
What is the runout of an ER collet?
Standard industrial ER collets have a runout (TIR — total indicator reading) of less than 0.01 mm at the nose. Precision-grade collets reach 0.005 mm TIR. For high-speed milling, lower runout reduces tool wear and improves surface finish.
Can I reuse a collet if it has been dropped?
If visibly damaged (flats, dings, cracked slots) — no, replace it. Even a small ding on the sealing surface causes runout and can damage the tool shank. ER collets are cheap enough that replacement is preferred over risking tool or part damage.
