How do I read an ISO turning insert code like CNMG120408-PM?
C = shape (80° diamond), N = clearance angle (0°, negative), M = tolerance class, G = chipbreaker/hole type, 12 = cutting edge length (12 mm), 04 = thickness (4.76 mm), 08 = nose radius (0.8 mm). The -PM suffix is the chipbreaker geometry: P for steel, M for multi-purpose.
Negative vs positive insert — what is the difference?
Negative inserts (CNMG, DNMG, TNMG, WNMG) have straight flanks and two usable faces — 6 cutting edges in double-sided designs. Positive inserts (CCMT, DCMT, VBMT) have relief angles and one usable face (fewer edges) but lower cutting forces and better surface finish. Rough with negative, finish with positive.
How many cutting edges does a turning insert have?
Depends on shape. CNMG/DNMG (80°/55° diamond, double-sided): 2 per side × 2 sides = 4 edges. TNMG (triangle, double-sided): 3 × 2 = 6 edges. WNMG (trigon, double-sided): 3 × 2 = 6 edges. CCMT/DCMT/VBMT (single-sided positive): 2-3 edges total. Square (SNMG): 4 × 2 = 8 edges.
What nose radius should I use?
0.4 mm (04) for fine finishing, 0.8 mm (08) general purpose, 1.2 mm (12) for roughing with heavy feed. Larger nose radius = better surface finish at higher feed, but more radial force (can push thin parts).
Can I use a turning insert for milling or vice versa?
No. Milling inserts (APMT, SPMT, RPMT etc.) sit in milling cutters at specific entry angles. Turning inserts mount in toolholders with different seating. The edges, geometries, and coatings are optimized for different chip flow patterns.
