CNMG turning inserts — 80° diamond negative rake, double-sided with 4 cutting edges per piece, the workhorse general-turning insert for steel, stainless and cast iron on CNC lathes.

Frequently asked questions

CNMG120408 — what does each digit mean?

CNMG = 80° diamond, negative, M tolerance, with hole and chipbreaker. 12 = 12 mm inscribed circle cutting edge length. 04 = 4.76 mm insert thickness. 08 = 0.8 mm nose radius. Match these numbers to your toolholder seat.

CNMG vs DNMG — when to use which?

CNMG (80° diamond) has a stronger nose and takes heavier feeds — used for roughing and general turning. DNMG (55° diamond) has a sharper point and reaches deeper into profile geometry — used for profiling, facing corners and finishing narrow grooves. Cost roughly the same; choose on geometry access.

How many cutting edges does a CNMG insert have?

Four edges per insert. 80° diamond with two corners per face × two faces. Compare to TNMG (triangle, 6 edges) and WNMG (trigon, 6 edges) which give more edges per piece at the same price — but only CNMG has the 80° strong corner for high-feed roughing.

What chipbreaker suffix should I pick for steel?

-PM for medium-load steel roughing and general turning — most common choice. -PF for lighter finishing cuts. -PR for heavy roughing with interrupted cuts. -QM for stainless and harder materials with tougher edge requirements. Different brands use slightly different letters (Korloy HM/HQ/PC, Mitsubishi MA/MP) but logic is the same.

Best grade for CNMG in mild steel turning?

For high-carbon and medium-carbon steels: Atomix AX3150, Korloy NC3120 / PC5300, Deskar LF6018 / LF6030, Mitsubishi US7020, TaeguTec TT3500. All are CVD-coated P-class grades with long life at moderate speeds (Vc 180-280 m/min).
