APMT milling inserts โ€” parallelogram shape with positive rake, used in shoulder mills, slot mills, and small-diameter indexable end mills. APMT1135, APMT1604 and APMT1604PDER-MM are the most common codes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between APMT1135 and APMT1604?

APMT1135 is an 11 mm nominal edge length, 3.5 mm thick โ€” fits small cutter bodies (12-32 mm diameter). APMT1604 is 16 mm edge length, 4.76 mm thick โ€” fits larger cutters (25-100+ mm diameter). Size must match your cutter body seat.

What does the PDER-MM suffix on APMT1604 mean?

PDER = chipbreaker geometry designator (positive, with step, right-hand orientation). MM = multi-purpose grade marker. Full code APMT1604PDER-MM is the most-common medium-load chipbreaker for general steel and stainless milling across brands.

Which grade should I use for stainless steel with APMT inserts?

For SS304/SS316 milling: Atomix AX3220, Korloy PC8110 / PC9530, Deskar LF6018, TaeguTec TT9080, Mitsubishi MP6130. All are PVD-coated M-class grades with tough edges and chip-flow geometries tuned for austenitic stainless.

Will my Widia APMT1604 fit a Korloy shoulder mill body?

Yes, if the ISO code matches exactly (APMT1604 is standardized across brands). The seat, screw and torque are identical. The grade and coating change performance but not physical fit.

Why does my APMT insert fail on the corners?

APMT is a parallelogram โ€” the leading corner takes impact loads on entry. Use a grade with higher toughness (lower hardness), reduce depth of cut at entry with a ramp-in rather than straight plunge, and ensure workpiece is clamped against movement. Wrong approach angle also causes corner chipping.
