Frequently asked questions

CCMT vs CCGT โ€” what is the difference?

CCMT has a medium nose radius and standard chipbreakers (general turning, stainless, cast iron). CCGT has a sharper, ground-edge finish with very fine chipbreakers โ€” purpose-built for aluminium, copper, brass and plastics where a razor edge prevents built-up edge.

Is CCMT single-sided or double-sided?

Single-sided (positive rake). Two cutting edges per insert. Compared to CCMG (negative, double-sided with four edges), CCMT has lower cutting forces and better finish but fewer edges per piece.

Most common CCMT sizes in Indian workshops?

CCMT060204 (small-to-medium finishing, matches SCLCR1212H06 holders), CCMT09T304/CCMT09T308 (medium general turning, 16-20 mm shank holders), CCMT120404/120408 (heavy finishing, 20-25 mm holders). 0.4 mm nose is finishing, 0.8 mm general, 1.2 mm roughing.

What grade is best for CCMT on aluminium?

Use CCGT (not CCMT) for aluminium with an AK / H10 / H01 uncoated polished grade, or a PCD insert for high-volume production. Regular coated CCMT grades create built-up edge on aluminium and give poor surface finish.

Will a 0.4 mm nose CCMT finish Ra 1.6?

At a feed of 0.05-0.08 mm/rev with a 0.4 mm nose, surface finish is typically Ra 1.2-1.6 ยตm on steel. Finer feed or larger nose (0.8 mm at same feed) goes down to Ra 0.8. Workpiece hardness, cutting fluid and machine rigidity all affect the outcome.
